What stable economy?
Here in Stormont Dundas & Glengarry we are the first to feel the effects of a downturn in the economy and the last to benefit from a rebound. Today's announcement that Domtar will close remaining operations at their Cornwall plant means a total loss of 1000 jobs. Several other manufacturing plants have, or are set, to close their doors. We've lost not hundreds but thousands of jobs in the last 18 months.
Martin's platform on the economy is not going to pay out very well in this riding. The city of Cornwall is not just hurting ... it's bleeding out.

I think in the Cornwall area there have been many rumors that the mill was closing. But it still was a shock when Domtar dropped its bomb just a few short weeks before Christmas and throwing all those people out of work. What another Mr. Grinch they pulled again this year. What a heartless bunch the way they manage their "business decisions".
There certainly has been a trend in Cornwall and the surrounding areas that the high paying unionized manufacturing jobs are quickly becoming extinct.
The small bright spot is Cornwall is getting a new call center with hundreds of low paying jobs.
I considered the pre-Christmas Grinch factor in Domtar's timing, but in the end it may have been more responsible to let people know before they spend a lot of money they really can't afford.
But,like knowing the end was inevitable, that doesn't make it hurt any less.
Small bright spot indeed. Until we have a more highly skilled labour force we will continue to have low paying jobs. Thanks for stopping by.
