Bench 'em coach
Someone needs to remind a few of the boys and girls on the Conservative team that politics is not bantam house-league hockey.
It was the NDP, not the Conservatives, who campaigned on floor-crossing legislation.
I suppose the second line and some of the fans in the stands have every right to decide that the body check distracts from the "pure skills" of the game. But the puck was dropped on January 23 and I fail to see the wisdom in Garth Turner and others embracing Ed Broadbent's ethics policy, however noble it may be, by trying to work out the finer points of the game during the first period.
Stop playing with your heads down kids. This match is with the Liberals, who are suited up and ready to nail you into the boards. We comfort children by telling them that what counts is not whether you win or lose. But it's cold comfort if the goons have downed you at the blue line and the goalie's been deeked my his own defenceman.
Garth Turner had his eye on a cabinet position. It didn't happen. Coyne wonders if he's a folk hero. I'm hoping someone buys the kid a Gameboy so he has something to do while he languishes on the back benches.
Don't bother complaining to the ref. They're not calling much in this tournament. Update: Ferret has more to say here.

Garth never said he wanted a cabinet post. If you read his blog before all the crazies jumped in (go back a few days), you'll see what his true opinion was. I think the phrase "there's no bad seat in the house of commons" was mentioned more than once.
Far as I know no one in caucus said they wanted a cabinet position, but plenty expected one and didn't get it. I haven't studied the list but it occurs to me that Garth may be the only MP with past government experience who didn't get a seat. Wonder why that is? I've seen no consensus within the Conservative party on floor-crossing legislation. Others are free to disagree but I'm of the opinion Garth's tactic to solidify consensus was foolhardy at best. It's a good thing there are no bad seats in the house because unless he shows more political astuteness than he as so far that seat is not going to change .... ever.
